Frequently asked questions

What goes into a tech pack?

Usually drawings of the front, back and sides (seams, pocket positions), a bill of materials (BOM) for fabric, lining, zips, buttons, labels and other trims, a measurement chart with measuring points and size-by-size dimensions (POM), colour, sewing and finishing instructions, and care label, tag and packaging instructions.

How many sample rounds are there?

A proto sample shows factory capability and basic shape, a fit sample uses real fabric and trims, and a pre-production (PP) sample is the last check before bulk. A first finished piece from the production line (TOP sample) is sometimes used as a final check. The number of rounds varies by product and factory.

Can bulk production differ from the sample?

Industry articles often explain that a sample is made in small quantity by an experienced worker while bulk production is split across lines and workers, so variation can occur. Fabric and dye lots also differ.

What is AQL?

A table-based standard that sets the sample size and the accept count for an inspection from the lot size and inspection level. “AQL 2.5” does not mean 2.5% defects are allowed; pass or fail is decided from the defect count in the table. For a lot of 4,000 pieces at general inspection level II and AQL 2.5, 200 pieces are drawn and the lot passes with 10 or fewer defects.

Do garments need KC certification?

Household textile products do not carry the KC mark. They show the labelling their safety standard sets: fibre content, manufacturer or importer name, country of origin and care instructions. Textile products for children aged 13 or under fall under a separate regime (supplier’s conformity confirmation) in the Children’s Products Safety Act. Check whether it applies and whether the wording is adequate with the guidance below and a testing body.

KATS, safety standard compliance KATS, supplier’s conformity confirmation

How is the country of origin marked?

The country of manufacture must be marked truthfully, and false marking is subject to enforcement and sanctions. Ask a customs broker whether garments are subject to marking.
